John Philip Enochs receives only one year probation for two charges of rape after pleading guilty to assault.
As reported by Indianapolis TV station WXIN-TV Fox59, a former Indiana University student charged in connection with two rape cases was sentenced Thursday after accepting a plea deal.
John Philip Enochs, 21, pled guilty to battery with moderate bodily injury and was sentenced to nothing more than one year of probation.
The former IU Bloomington student was charged with two counts of rape, with the most recent incident occurring in April 2015 and an earlier incident in 2013.
In the state of Indiana, rape is a Level 3 Felony, and a conviction can mean up to 16 years in prison. Enochs agreed to plead to the lower charge, a Class A misdemeanor, and the rape charges were dismissed.
Court records reveal that Enochs spent only one day in jail.

This video from WXIN-TV provides more detail on the case.
The 2015 assault was reported at the Delta Tau Delta fraternity at Indiana University in April 2015. A warrant was issued for the arrest after police identified the perpetrator from security camera footage, and Enochs then surrendered to police.
Court documents reveal that the victim reported to the police that she’d been raped at the fraternity house, but was unsure of the identity of the rapist. The victim stated that she had told him to stop repeatedly, but that the rapist had held her down. She was later able to escape from the room where she was being held.
The security video recovered from the frat house by police showed Enochs entering the room with the victim, and then showed her leaving 24 minutes later.
Health officials found that the rape victim had lacerations on her genitals.
During the investigation into the 2015 case, police found a similar case involving Enochs from two years prior. The victim from the 2013 rape case agreed to help investigators after being contacted by the police.
Witness statements, identification by victims, and DNA evidence gave prosecutors cause to charge Enochs with both counts of rape.
According to the New York Daily News, Indiana University Bloomington has been criticized in the past for its poor handling of rape and sexual assault cases on the campus. Data from the Department of Education shows that there are currently three open Title IX complaints against the school.
It isn’t clear why prosecutors allowed Enochs to plead to the lesser charge, but there’s no doubt that women (and several men) are expressing their rage on social media for the light sentence.
