The Moving Train: Muhammadu Buhari, Nigerians, and Pornography. By Sylvanus Omoniyi

For anyone who has never travelled beyond the shores of Nigeria, it is very easy to conclude that Nigeria is a good country, that everything is okay in this dark country occupied by dark people. Such kind of people only need to visit other countries to discover how messed up Nigeria is. I’m not here to blame anyone or argue. I’m just here to speak my mind. It’s true that we always rush to blame Muhammadu Buhari when anything goes wrong in this country but honestly, he is not the only one responsible for the mess we are in. If your father is a politician and he is not doing what is expected of him, then your family is part of the problem of this country. If you are occupying an office and you are abusing your office, you are part of the problem. If you have a company and you are shortpaying your staff, you are the problem of this country.

Young people in Nigeria are not lazy, as some people think. They are strong. They have talents. They have dreams and aspirations. They are hardworking. However, Nigeria is a country where your dreams can get shattered even before you dream them. Most young people’s dreams start and end in their sleep. On their beds. They never see the light of the day because the people of Nigeria don’t believe in Nigerians. Nigeria does not encourage dreams. The government and the people of this country are always ready to frustrate your dreams with anything. I mean, anything. Apart from the government, there are people who will get sad when they see you doing well and they will find every opportunity to drag you down. Nigerians hate themselves, and that is why this country is still backward. Isn’t it funny how most people in Nigeria are ready to contribute money for you when you are dying but are ever unwilling to help or support you when you need to do something that will make your life better and beautiful?

Many things are not working in this country but we keep on deceiving ourselves. We keep on listening to old people who are already frustrated with their own lives. It is in Nigeria that old people who have never achieved anything with their lives will call you and start advising you on how you can achieve your dreams. What happened to them following their own advice? You see, Nigeria is filled with old insane people, who in their own eyes, are the wisest. They are always ready to advise you but will never support you because their own lives are miserable. They know it themselves. The only thing they know is how to talk to you. You should stop listening to them. You should stop listening to people who know how to advise you but who will never support your dreams. They are useless.

Meanwhile, on those who think I’m a mad man because of my perception on most issues, here is for you. It’s astonishing how some people think I’m crazy and that I don’t know what I’m doing. And that is alright. The reality is that some of these people don’t understand my journey and I don’t have any explanation to make to anyone because I’m not a graduate of law. I have resolved never to explain my life or actions to anyone again. Not even my mother. Except on rare occasions. I will continue to live in mystery and do whatever makes me happy. It is not compulsory I see things the way you see them. Do what works for you and I will do what works for me.

Like I have said before, Nigeria will get better when people are given the opportunity to do what they know how to do best. Not everyone will do white collar jobs. Or blue collar jobs. Some will do brown collar. And some will even do green collar. The government should stop telling people how to live their lives. Some people can sing well. Some can dance. Some can act. There are those who can write. And those who can teach. And there are also those who know how to fuck well. The government should encourage them all. Nigerians know how to criticize people who do porn: people who are gifted in fucking. But that is their own gift. They should go ahead and make money with their gift. You should also go ahead and make money with your righteousness. Porn stars are people like us. I don’t blame them for anything. They have to make money like the rest of us. You won’t give them money if they come begging. And if they steal, you will kill them. The truth of the matter is that most of us are porn stars. These people do it publicly but some of us do it privately: in our bedrooms and hotels. Everyone is guilty of porn, whether private or public. It makes no difference. We shouldn’t judge people for what we do ourselves. There are many ways to achieve your dreams. Choose the one that works for you and stop waiting for some imaginary people to make your life beautiful.
