Republican Senator Mark Kirk has officially unendorsed Donald Trump today, just hours after fellow Republican Senator Lindsay Graham called for Republican officials to disavow Trump. Trump’s racist attacks on Indiana-born Judge Curiel, based on his Mexican heritage, have gone too far. Ever since his remarks that Curiel is inherently biased against Trump due to his Mexican heritage, the Republican party has been in shambles, with officials everywhere scrambling to denounce Trump’s racist claims while rationalizing why they still intend to vote for him. Kirk issued his statement today, which includes the following:
“I have spent my life building bridges and tearing down barriers – not building walls. That’s why I find Donald Trump’s belief that an American-born judge of Mexican descent is incapable of fairly presiding his case is not only dead wrong, it is un-American.
As the Presidential campaign progressed, I was hoping the rhetoric would tone down and reflect a campaign that was inclusive, thoughtful and principled. While I oppose the Democratic nominee, Donald Trump’s latest statements, in context with past attacks on Hispanics, women and the disabled like me, make it certain that I cannot and will not support my party’s nominee for President regardless of the political impact on my candidacy or the Republican Party.“
Then, Kirk took to Twitter to attack how unsettlingly volatile and unqualified Trump would be the U.S. Commander in Chief. He tweeted, “Given my military experience, Donald Trump does not have the temperament to command our military or our nuclear arsenal.” So far it seems like Trump doesn’t have much to offer politics besides racist, hateful, inflammatory campaigning – let’s hope he doesn’t make it into office where he would the opportunity to actually do something with his bigotry.
